Tabitha Residents Preserve the History of Nebraska Barns

Larry and Lorna Epp—self-made historians and husband and wife—recently shared their “Barns Tell a Story” presentation with the Grand Island community and fellow Residents at Tabitha at Prairie Commons.

Since the 1980s, the Epps have shared the history of these American treasures to thousands. Over the years, several publications have taken notice and spotlighted their storytelling, including Nebraskaland Magazine, Nebraska Farmer and the Omaha World-Herald.

The Aurora, Neb., natives and lifelong farmers began their research after recognizing prominent or particularly eye-catching barns they happened upon during their travels throughout the Midwest. As the years went by, they noticed how some of those barns fell into disrepair, neglect, or misuse when they were no longer being utilized for agriculture.

“Barns are disappearing,” said Larry Epp. “If we never did the work, they’d never be recorded.”

From gable, gambrel and gothic roofs—and every style of barn in between—the Epps met with each landowner to learn more, capture photos, and craft stories that incorporate a mix of history, family memories and architectural tidbits.

A favorite barn of Larry’s is the impressive three-story Starke Round Barn in Red Cloud, Nebraska—though he is fond of every barn featured.

He shared that “memories fill the room during each showing,” and recalled a time where a woman approached the couple and said, “I could just smell the hay while you were describing the barns.”

The Epps have downsized from their farm to an independent living apartment at Tabitha at Prairie Commons. They said they chose the community due to spacious floorplans, beautiful gathering spaces, a heated and enclosed garage, and safety.

Here, they can focus on the things they love—and continue to deliver their well-researched program.

“These barn stories are just as relevant today as they were 40 years ago,” shared Larry. “We will continue to tell them and pass along these memories.”

“Everyone has a story. Our Residents have such interesting and varied ones to share,” said Krista Finley, Leasing & Marketing Counselor, Tabitha at Prairie Commons. “It is a wonderful way for us to engage in each other’s life experiences. The sense of community at Prairie Commons provides opportunities for us to Celebrate one another’s accomplishments and most importantly, empower one another to live joyfully, age gratefully.”
