Part of the original Green House® Project, Tabitha's four main campus residences offer Seniors all the comforts of home, including:

Gina's Story

Gina promised her mother years ago that she’d never put her in a nursing home. When her mom became sick and lost her mobility, however, Gina soon found she was under-equipped to be a long-term family caregiver.

In visiting with a Tabitha Continuum Navigator, Gina discovered a Tabitha Residence to be the perfect solution for her mom’s needs. Today, Gina’s mom lives a life free of the one-size-fits-all, traditional nursing home model: she rises and goes to bed when she desires, she dines family-style with the other residents whom she happily calls friends, and she even gets to continue the gardening hobby she’s savored all her life.

Gina visits nearly every day, and rests in the peace of mind her mom is being cared for with dignity and love, while truly enjoying life’s pleasures and the deep relationships that form and thrive in a Tabitha Residence home.

Why Tabitha

In May 2006, Tabitha opened Nebraska’s first—and just the nation’s second—Green House® Project. A Green House transforms the way care is delivered, departing from the traditional nursing home model by bringing long-term care into a home setting. Today, Tabitha maintains the Green House ideas in the residences on its main Lincoln campus.

One of the first indications that life in a Tabitha Residence is significantly different from a traditional nursing home was when one of our residents asked to eat her first meal outdoors on the patio. Her wish was immediately granted. Since then, her love of the outdoors was served every day weather permitted. Why is this remarkable? For years, the same Senior was cautioned “never to go outside alone." Once in a Tabitha Residence, because she had the assistive technology to keep her in touch with caregivers whenever she was on her own outdoors, she lived on her own terms.

Although Tabitha Residences can't promise medical miracles, it’s true that their residents make remarkable clinical strides. One resident who consistently—and dangerously—had been losing weight in a nursing home began to gain healthy mass as a resident. Another resident, who was nearly bedfast upon admission, today walks to the dining room with a little help from a caregiver. And, a resident determined to walk again by her upcoming birthday took independent steps just days prior to entering her 101st year.

One evening, the main campus residence family welcomed three newly trained caregivers to the household during an evening punctuated with music, dancing, eating, champagne popping and a warmth that can only be felt when one is truly at home. That night, in one beautiful and spontaneous moment, a resident leaned in to one of the guests of honor and whispered, “You know, there just isn’t time to be lonely here.”

William H. Thomas, M.D. initiated the Green House Project, and it currently is being developed in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the National Cooperative Bank Development Corporation (NCBDC).
