It can be difficult to find extra time to give back outside of a hectic work-life schedule. But thanks to the flexibility of the Tabitha Meals on Wheels program, Kristin Wortman, a dedicated Volunteer, manages to fit in delivering meals to Lincoln neighbors.
Kristin has a full plate: driving her kids to their activities, serving as a fitness class instructor and volunteering for various school functions and American Cancer Society events.
After watching a 10/11 news feature about Tabitha Meals on Wheels’ impact on the community, she stood baffled by the number of local Seniors with food insecurity due to financial constraints and the inability to drive. She was driven to help meet this need and reached out to learn more about the volunteering opportunity.
From the very start, the Tabitha team helped make the process easy and smooth.
Kristin submitted her availability and was greeted by other Volunteers who helped load the coolers into her vehicle on her scheduled days. She has delivered almost every route over the past year, and has even invited her two kids along.
The experience has been eye-opening for them to see how some must rely on others to meet basic needs that they easily take for granted. It’s also taught them important life lessons and helped build their character through leadership and charity.
“Volunteering for Tabitha Meals on Wheels is a pleasure. It’s rewarding knowing that I’m helping make a difference in someone’s life,” Wortman said. “I would recommend it to anyone because it’s easy, flexible and routes can be customized to fit your needs.”
